Antenatal education

I offer private antenatal sessions or courses in your own home, at a time that suits you. Sessions usually last between two and three hours and can be tailored to meet your own needs. Topics that I typically cover are

  • Preparing for birth – changes in pregnancy, helping your baby into a good position for birth, ways to stay positive and avoid stress
  • Support in labour – your birth partners role
  • Signs of labour – how does labour start, when to call the hospital, coping strategies
  • Stages of labour – what happens, what to expect
  • Pain relief options - including the pros and cons
  • When intervention is needed in labour – what, when and why; including induction, monitoring, instrumental births and cesarean birth.
  • Coping strategies for labour – self-help techniques, relaxation and massage
  • Pregnancy and birth choices
  • Choosing where to have your baby
  • Looking after a newborn, understanding your baby’s cues, feeding your baby
  • Early parenting, lifestyle changes
  • Support in the early weeks

I am a qualified breastfeeding counsellor and these sessions will also provide practical information to help you to start breastfeeding and to consider what life will be like with a new baby.
